The 5th International Cultural Festival and 60th Anniversary Celebration of ECNU, organized by the International Students Office of the Global Education Center, was held on Oct. 16th, with over 200 Chinese and foreign students from more than 30 countries performing. Many honorable guests attended the event, such as the President of ECNU, the Vice President of ECNU, and the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Shanghai, the Consulate General of Thailand in Shanghai, and the President of Victoria University and so on.
In the Festival, Mr. Yu Lizhong, President of ECNU, gave a speech, hoping that more students would attend this gathering, where they could broaden their horizons, open their minds and meet new friends. And Later, Mr. David Turpin, President of Victoria University wished the Festival great success.
The Festival began with a film about the 60th Anniversary Celebration of ECNU, with the spirit of ‘peaches and plums could be remembered without utterance; in the same way, teachers’ good behaviors could last a long period’, which struck a responsive chord in the hearts of the audience. The traditional Chinese Dance dragon and lion, performed by American students, created a festival atmosphere; Performances, for example, RAP, songs, Peking Opera, Chinese folk songs, comic dialogues, etc., together with the fashion show, were highly appreciated. KONISHI MIHO, Japanese painter, the former student of ECNU, came all the way back to the festival, sending her work of art to the University as a present, naming it “a remarkable place producing outstanding people”, while Mr. Tong Shijun, the party committee secretary of ECNU, cut the ribbon of the painting. The song ‘Tibetan Plateau’ sung by Mr. Yu Lizhong, President of ECNU and Mr. Chen Qun, Vice President of ECNU, was another highlight of the festival. The festival ended in a chorus of ‘Happy Birthday!’ and ‘ECNU- our home’.
Recently, great progress has been achieved in the International Education at ECNU. Each year over 4,500 international students from more than 100 countries register at the University, with an increasing number of graduate students, including students from Master’s Programs and Doctoral Programs.
The International Cultural Festival, based on the idea of ‘Cultural Exchange foster great minds’, was launched in 2007, aiming to encourage communications between students from different cultural backgrounds. The festival, which has been running for five years, has varying themes and activities, such as a Talent Show in the first Festival, Fashion of China, Towards the Expo and Top-ten International Student Singers Competition, all of which mark another Cultural landmark at ECNU.
