Department of Chinese Language (undergraduate program)

The Chinese Language Department is committed to the undergraduate program of Chinese Language provided to foreign students, with four concentrations respectively on Chinese Language, Business Chinese, International Business (bilingual: Chinese & English) and International Business( bilingual: Chinese & Japanese). It admits overseas Chinese and foreign students holding diplomas from senior high schools or above and with their native language not to be Chinese.

Chinese Direction

Introduction to the specialty:

This program is designed to train competent professionals well versed in the Chinese language with sufficient knowledge about other branches of learning to meet the increasing needs of the international community. After four years of learning, students are expected to have reached Level 6 of new HSK (Chinese proficiency test), have a decent grasp of the basic theoretical knowledge of the Chinese language and the five skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating, as well as an all-around knowledge of Chinese culture, history and society, cross-cultural communicative competence, and the ability to work in the Chinese context, including the use of IT software in Chinese.

Comprehensive Spoken and Written Chinese, Intensive Reading in Chinese, Chinese Listening and Speaking, Chinese Writing, Introduction to China, History of China, Modern Chinese, Classical Chinese, Selected Readings of Chinese Literature, Chinese folklore, etc.

Business Chinese Direction

Introduction to the specialty:

The design of the program aims at training the students’ ability of business Chinese listening, speaking, reading, writing; familiarizing them with general knowledge and basic theories of modern business and Chinese modern business society and culture; imparting the knowledge of development of all aspects of Chinese economy and society to them. The curriculum also helps the students achieve the ability to conduct intercultural and business communication in Chinese, conduct survey and work under intercultural business environment and have the potential to develop into high level talented personnel excelling in China-related economic and trade cooperation.

International Business--Chinese and English Bilingual Direction

Introduction to the program:

This program is designed to train competent professionals well versed in both Chinese and English with sufficient knowledge about other branches of learning to meet the increasing needs of the international community; the program helps students cultivate the ability to communicate in a cross-cultural context and engage in international business.

Education model:

The 1st, 2nd, and 4th year of the program is attended at East China Normal University in Shanghai; the 3rd year is attended at an university abroad (University of Manchester and University of Sheffield in Britain, University of California Sandi ego in USA).

Main Course:

Comprehensive Spoken and Written Business Chinese, Intensive Reading in Business Chinese, Business Chinese Listening and Speaking, Business Chinese Writing, Chinese Economy, Business Etiquette, Business Communication, Enterprise Management, Marketing etc.

• Students are divided according to English Language proficiency.
• No more than 16 students per class.
• Core language classes each morning focusing on speaking, listening, reading and writing.
• Target modules each afternoon. Examples of target modules are:
      - IELTS preparation
      - Integrated skills with British Cultural Studies
      - English for Business and Management
Fees:

The tuition is about £290 per week (35weeks) in Britain( pay directly to the Manchester University), accommodation fee (home stay) is about £128 per week with £80 booking fee. The tuition is about 120,000RMB per year in the US and the living expense is about 150,000RMB.

International Business--Chinese and Japanese Bilingual Direction

Introduction to the program:

The teaching scheme of the program considers the training of practice-oriented talents who can engage in business activities in Chinese and Japanese language context under intercultural environment as its principles. Courses such as business Chinese, Japanese, business knowledge, and intercultural communication play a major role in the curriculum. The design of the curriculum aims at training the students’ ability of business Chinese and Japanese listening, speaking, reading, writing and interpretation; familiarizing them with general knowledge and basic theories of modern; imparting the knowledge of development of all aspects of Chinese and Japanese economy and society to them.

The students are required to:

  1. Study at East China Normal University in the 1st, 2nd and 4th academic year when they will study Chinese, elementary Japanese and other related courses, and study at MANABI College in the 3rd academic year when they will study Japanese and other related courses.
  2. Obtain the Level 6 certificate of HSK Chinese Proficiency Test; master a systematic vocabulary and basic grammar of business Chinese; possess good ability of business Chinese listening, speaking, reading, writing and interpretation. Students are also required to achieve Level 2 of JLPT in Japanese.
  3. To be familiar with Chinese and Japanese business culture; be acquainted with Chinese and Japanese modern national conditions and economic development.
  4. Possess the ability of intercultural communication and business negotiation and working in Chinese and Japanese language context under intercultural business environment.
  5. Master operation and application of computer with Chinese and Japanese language system.
  6. Possess the ability to conduct business survey and write reports and thesis in Chinese and Japanese.

Students can do a part-time work within 28 hours per week after they get a work permit in Japan.

The tuition is about 50,000RMB per year in Japan and the life expense is about 80,000RMB.

Transfer students cannot be accepted to 3rd grade of the International Business (Chinese- English bilingual) direction, student will study abroad in the 3rd year.
