On Jun. 5th, the closing ceremony of “Shanghai Summer School—The Diplomats' Chinese Language Program” was successfully held. This program is jointly sponsored by Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, Foreign Affairs Office of Shanghai Municipal Government, and organized by East China Normal University. Director of International Exchange Division, Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, Mr. Yang Weiren, Director of Consulate Affairs Division, Shanghai Foreign Affairs Office, Ms. Zhang Ying, Deputy Director of Global Education Center of ECNU, Mr. Wang Gang and the diplomats from all over the world attended the ceremony.
Firstly, Mr. Wang Gang, deputy director of Global Education Center of ECNU, expressed his congratulations to all the diplomats who had completed the program smoothly. He reviewed the development of the program in the past six years, and gave a high praise to the diplomats who had insisted learning Chinese in spite of the busy work. He hoped that the diplomats would return to our university if possible, and they would be welcome forever. Then, Mr.Dejian Marinkovik from Consulate General of the Republic of Serbia in Shanghai also gave a speech as a representative of all the diplomat students. He shared his learning experience and feeling during the two months in the program, and expressed sincere thanks to the program and the Chinese teachers. After that, all the diplomat students were issued the certificate of completion.
Then 2016 Shanghai Diplomats’ Chinese Speech Contest started. 9 diplomats of different Chinese levels participated in the contest. Some of them introduced their diplomatic working experience in different countries, some showed their life in Shanghai with their family, others told us their interesting experience in China society or about Chinese culture. Ms. Sara Ferrando from Italy, with fluent Chinese, told us how she had achieved her Chinese dream step by step, and won the First Prize. Mr. Alessandro Parrinello from Italy and Ms. Jenny from Britain won the Second Prize. Others won the Third Prize or Prize of Participation.
After the speech contest, Director Yang Weiren and Zhang Ying gave a high praise to all the participants’ performance. They said that the program had made a lot of exploration and achieved many breakthroughs in the past six years. But it would continue to pursue more progress in the future. They hoped that more diplomats may have the opportunity to participate in, and the program would do more to promote friendly exchanges and cultural understanding between different countries. The closing ceremony was not an ending, but a new beginning.
Finally, all the Chinese teachers and diplomat students sang the Chinese song "Auld lang syne" together. We will remember each other forever in spite of time and space between us. Our friendship will become eternal!
