What you will learn from this program?

This course focuses on the theories and facts about basic education as well as Chinese educational system. Through this course, students will be enabled to command the theories of education, facts on Chinese modern society and issues, etc. The course is composed of a series of themed lectures, such as Philosophy and Thoughts of Chinese Education, History of Chinese Education, Consciousness and Mental Development Characteristics of the Youth, Development Trend of China’s Urban and Rural Areas, Education Equality in Different Regions, Policies and Challenges in Chinese Basic Education and so on.

What unique experience you will obtain?

All of the academic background will lay a solid foundation for the students, helping you shape basic framework of professional knowledge. Furthermore, the coursework, orientation, cultural lecture and group visit to a key primary school in Shanghai will be useful to prepare the students for the internship, familiarize them with the cultural differences and motivate them to do critical thinking, draw comparison on the education equality between different kinds of schools.

During the last week, the students would be led to a migrant children school. Through service learning experience, you would be asked to study on the distinctiveness that the migrant children have in their way of living, behaving and thinking. You are required to reflect on education, social issues and cultural differences; observe the changes that are taking place on those being served before and after the services; furthermore think about the roles and responsibilities which should be taken by the government as well as the citizens in order to revitalize the education of this vulnerable group.

Service learning is beyond the limitations of traditional way of learning. It provides you opportunities to learn and experience in real situations to enhance your self-confidence, cross-cultural communication skills, self-management skills. In this process, you will perceive China in a real and profound way, and will also get a brand new understanding about the nature of "education".
