The International Graduate Program in Comparative Modernization (GCM, major of Study on the Basic Problems of Modern Chinese History) resides within the School of Marxism in East China Normal University. The School of Marxism in ECNU has strong academic traditions and has accumulated invaluable expertise and experiences. Renowned for its excellence and leading role in social science research and education, School of Marxism has achieved A class In the fourth round of national subject assessment. Many of its graduates have become senior scholars and practical leaders. Most of the faculty has been awarded National Science Fund, has undertaken state-level and provincial-level academic projects, published numerous academic books, monographs and journal articles, and achieved various research prizes. In 2015, the International Communication Center for the Achievements of Marxism’s Sinicization was established, consisting of experts in their corresponding fields, including philosophy, history, politics, economy, law and education.
GCM offers overseas students the opportunity to study modernization and related social science while living in China’s largest city, Shanghai. GCM recruits students from all over the world, fostering a unique, multidisciplinary and multinational environment where diverse background would enhance rigorous academic study. It will systematically provide a series of courses mainly for international students to study the concept and practice of modern transformation within the global context.The project will particularly lead international students to better understand the ideas of socialism with Chinese characteristics and the great achievements of reform and opening-up. It is dedicated to the transmission of Chinese voice, to establish the Chinese discourse, to display the achievements of socialism with Chinese characteristics, and cultivate international assistance conducive to China's development.
The teaching staff has a multidisciplinary background, including political science, philosophy, history, economics, law and other disciplines. Most of the prospective instructors have more than one year of overseas study or work experience. They have built a solid professional foundation and a broad international perspective, and can communicate with international students smoothly and offer all-English courses. More than 10 teachers of the School faculty have joined the program, including Gu Hongliang, Gong Yongmei, Xu Ruifang, Yao Xiaona, Chen Rong, Hong Yanni, He Songxu and so on. In addition to the full-time teachers listed in the form, the program also invited some distinguished professors at home and abroad to join. A team of outstanding teachers have agreed to offer courses or hold special lectures.

The candidates for Master Degree are required to meet the requirements for Chinese Language, academic credits for course study (at least 24 credits) and dissertation (at least 30 thousand English words. The candidates for PhD Degree are required to meet the requirements for Chinese Language, academic credits for course study and dissertation(at least 120 thousand English). For international students in non-Chinese language taught programs, they MUST pass HSK-3 (≥180) or pass the "International Chinese Proficiency Standard Test" arranged by the university before graduation. Upon completion of the program, graduates will earn a Master Degree or Doctor Degree recognized by the Education Ministry of the People’s Republic of China.
The candidate are required to learn Chinese at least for 2 semesters. The language for instruction and dissertation in GCM is English.
3-5 year Master & 4-6 Year PhD
The three-year master program (3 as basic setting and 5 as the longest study period including extension) provides a comprehensive introduction to the ideology, movement and reform of modernization, and will also discuss the history, economy, politics, law, society, and foreign policy related with modernization in global sphere. In the second year, the students should conduct research on a topic of their own choice. The four- year PhD program (4 as the basic and 6 as the longest) provides deeper research based on the study for master degree. The students are required to publish academic papers besides course study which will be finished mostly in the 1st year.
