Recommended Credit: 6 Semester: Spring 2018 Schedule: Monday 5:00-8:00pm Course Description In an increasingly interconnected global labor market, employers are looking to hire people with experience in diverse and multicultural environments.The ability to engage and communicate across cultures is an important skill that enables job seekers in navigating the job market and a constantly evolving workplace. An avenue to greater cultural immersion, this semester-long, unpaid international internship represents a unique opportunity to gain awareness of the challenges, subtleties, and pitfalls of working and living in a culture other than your own. Participating in an international internship enables you to put theory into practice, applying classroom conceptual learning to your direct, professional, and personal experiences in your foreign workplace. This course is comprised of two parts which together offer experience in and significant reflection on the multicultural workplace. First you will be placed in a semester-long internship in your host city within a sector related to your professional ambitions. Second, you will enroll in an academic seminar that will require you to analyze and evaluate the workplace culture and the daily business environment you experience. Throughout the semester, and in collaboration with interns from other sectors, these seminars are designed to build the cognitive, behavioral, and affective skills you need to interpret and navigate the multicultural workplace. To this end, you will use current theoretical approaches to global competence, intercultural communication, and global business/workplace culture. While the seminar is conducted in English, your internship placement will be available in English and/or Chinese. Learning Objectives The objective of this course is to Gain meaningful, professional work experience in a multicultural setting Apply theoretical knowledge and cultural insight to real multicultural settings Practice applying practical skills critical to success in multicultural workplaces Understand attributes and skills that contribute to intercultural competence Course Prerequisites None. Methods of Instruction Internship Placement- Instructional Format Over the course of the term, students will work a minimum of 340 placement hours, including a week of orientation and training with employers. The internship is unpaid and follows a planned and supervised program design. Students must develop a CV or resume and a detailed professional development plan upon acceptance into the program. Students will participate in a semester-long, intensive bi-weekly seminar with faculty and guest speakers from collaborative internship sites or related businesses. These seminars will focus on the business and workplace culture of the host city and/or country involved. Students may also be required to participate in an onsite interview at your selected internship organization. Seminar- Instructional format This seminar component to your on-the-job learning will foster interaction and exchange with faculty and other student interns. Various teaching methods, such as lectures, discussions, cultural encounters, and extensive outside readings, will be used. There will also be instructor-led visits to course-related sites, businesses, and/or institutions in the city. Some study will take place during class-time, however out-of-class independent learning will also be assigned. The seminar may meet bi-weekly. Assessment and Final Grade Internship 60% of Total Grade: Employment Agreement 10% Reflection Journals (4) 20% Internship Report 30% Seminar 40% of Total Grade: Group Project 15% Final Presentation 15% Class Participation 10% In all assignments, consideration will be given to the quality and complexity of thought, citations of specific examples from course readings and discussion, active participation and thoughtful or thought-provoking reflections and observations. ASSESSMENT OVERVIEW Internship Assessment (60% of Total Grade): By participating in the internship program, you accept full responsibility for the position you hold. You will be expected to provide professional and quality work, as well as completing all projects as assigned. At the internship location, you must comply with all company policies and procedures. Permissible work absences extend only to illness or other serious circumstances. Missing an internship commitment for curricular reasons or co-curricular activities is not considered a permissible absence unless agreed upon in advance by the employer or internship supervisor and ECNU appointed internship liaison (Academic Director or Academic Coordinator). You are responsible for maintaining professional and ethical behavior at all times. Any changes in your placement or dismissal from the internship position must be reported to the ECNU internship liaison. Employment Agreement (10%): At the beginning of the placement you must create a written agreement with your internship supervisor detailing the projected goals of your experience. This agreement will be used for tracking your progress toward goals and ensuring that assigned projects align with the overarching academic and/or career goals you have. Additional details will be provided in class to create an internship agreement. Final assessment of the agreement will also take into consideration an evaluation from your site supervisor and an end-of-term self-evaluation. Reflection Journals (20%): You must keep a Reflection Journal, with a minimum of five entries, tracking and documenting your professional experiences and personal observations. This will be used during class discussions and projects throughout the semester. Additional details will be presented in class regarding journal guidelines. Internship Report (30%): At the end of the internship, you must submit an internship report documenting your experience (10 - 15 pages). The report will draw from class discussions, readings, assignments, reflection journals, the employment agreement and assessment. It serves as a culminating reflection and evaluation of the overall internship course, your work placement experience and complementary classroom studies. Additional guidelines for the report will be provided in class. Seminar Assessment (40% of Total Grade): Group Project (15%): The group project is designed to help you gain insight into variations in the workplace across cultures by observing and discussing differences and similarities in experiences with peers. These interactions will help you better analyze your own experiences through a comparative framework. Assignments are designed to help you analyze how the skills, theories and tools you are learning better prepare you to fully participate in a global workplace, communicate across cultures, and understand the role that culture plays in the workplace. Additionally, project work gives you an opportunity to gain experience working in teams, working with technology to facilitate workflow with peers remotely, and in solving problems and managing projects through multi-disciplinary methods. Final Presentation (15%): The final presentation is based on the internship report and is designed to highlight your ability to understand, apply, analyze and synthesize course content. Specific guidelines for the presentation will be discussed in detail in class. Class Participation (10%) To create a positive learning experience for all students in this course, it is critical that you to come to class prepared, complete required readings before class, engage in group work, and offer insight by sharing observations and knowledge gained inside and outside of the classroom. Attendance and punctuality are expected and do not count positively towards the participation grade. However, absences and tardiness will have a negative effect on the final grade. Attendance Every student is expected to attend all scheduled class sessions (including field studies), arriving on time, and thoroughly prepared for the days class activities. Instructors will compile regular attendance records for every course and take these records into account when evaluating student participation and overall course performance. Late arrivals or early departures from class can result in being marked absent. Excused Absences Absences may be excused in the event of a medical necessity or family emergency. In such cases, you may request an Excused Absence Form from the Program Coordinator in the International Students office. Submit the form to the instructor of record for her or his approval, and return the completed and signed form to the Program Coordinator.
