Recommended Credit: 6 Course Description With the rise of global economic integration and cross-cultural communication and cooperation, the demand on employees with global perspective, deep understanding of diverse business/cultural environments and strong intercultural communication and leadership competence has been increasing rapidly over years. As world s second biggest economy and the biggest exporter in commodities, China not only plays an indispensable role in world s economy, but also constantly impacts and influences the global economic and social pattern. Therefore, gaining a solid and practical work experience in Shanghai, the economic capital of China, will benefit students future career in many ways. An avenue to greater cultural immersion, this global internship course offers students great opportunities to observe, analyze and personal experience the unique Chinese business and cultural environment, apply theoretical knowledge in real multicultural workplace, and develop the best-fit practices of your own in Shanghai s diverse settings. The course is comprised of a practical internship placement and an academic seminar. The internship placement covers many sectors, such as finance, capital investments, media, education, law and NGO, to match students career ambitions. The seminar provides strong theoretical supports and develops reflective and productive discussions, which both will enable students to soon adapt local culture and better learn from day to day work. While the seminar is conducted in English, the internship placement will be available in English and/or Chinese. Learning Objectives The objective of this course is to Have an intimate knowledge of Chinese political & economic system, Chinese society and its development, social norms and business culture, and understand how those factors are related to a business/organization s success. Reflect the work experience during the program and recognize your strength and interests that will benefit your future job seeking. Course Prerequisites: None. Methods of Instruction Internship Placement- Instructional Format Over the course of the term, students will work a minimum of 224 placement hours (average 16 hours per week), including a week of orientation and training with employers. The internship is unpaid and follows a planned and supervised program design. Students need to submit a CV and a resume upon acceptance into the program and attend online interviews with ECNU program managers and potential employers as guided. The placement will be confirmed 4 weeks prior to program starts. Seminar- Instructional format This seminar, led by ECNU faculty, provides theoretical knowledge needed when students work in a multicultural environment especially in Chinese business environment, introduce practical communication approaches, and induce in-class reflections and case studies. Various teaching methods, such as lectures, discussions, cultural encounters, and company visits, will be used to foster interaction and exchange with faculty and fellow interns, and to ensure the academic goals being achieved. The seminar meets once a week, 2 or 3 hours each time, and 30 or 36 hours in total. Assessment and Final Grade Internship Placement  60% of Total Grade: Reflection Journals (4) 20% Internship Report to Employer 20% Employer Evaluation 20% Seminar  40% of Total Grade: Group Projects 15% Research Paper & Presentation 15% Class Participation 10% Assessment Overview Internship Placement (60% of Total Grade): In the orientation week of the program, students and employers need to sign an agreement that clarifies assignments & responsibilities, goals and report & evaluation procedures. Students are expected to provide professional and quality work, and complete all projects assigned. Moreover, students must comply with company policies and procedures, and maintain professional and ethical behavior at all time. Reflection Journals (20%): Over the course of the term, students need to submit 4 Reflection Journals (5 -8 pages each, double-spaced) tracking and documenting work experiences and personal observations. This will be used during class discussions and group projects. Additional details will be presented in class regarding journal guidelines. Internship Report to Employer (20%): At the end of the program, students must submit an internship report (10-15 pages, double-spaced) to employers. The Internship report should include two main parts: student s personal work experience and performance review, and insights of the company as well as the industry and constructive advices you may have. Students much send a copy of the Internship Report to seminar instructor and ECNU program manager. Additional guidelines for the report will be provided in class. Employer Evaluation (20%) Employers are requested to complete an evaluation form of students performance over the program. The Evaluation from employers provides valuable information for students to improve their theoretical study, communicational skills, work practices and so on. Seminar Assessment (40% of Total Grade): Group Projects (15%): The group projects are designed to encourage sufficient interactions with peers. Students can learn knowledges and insights of various companies/industries and successful practices on solving problems that may happen in a multicultural workplace from fellow interns through group discussions. The group projects will cover different topics considered critical factors to career success. A group presentation of the project is needed. Additional guidelines for the group projects will be provided in class. Research Paper & Presentation (15%): Students need to complete an original research paper (10-15 pages, double-spaced) for this course that investigates a topic related to intercultural communication, cross-cultural management, industry/market/business analysis or cultural encounters. The research paper is designed to highlight student s ability to understand, apply, analyze and synthesize course content. A presentation in the class of the research paper is needed. Additional guidelines for the research paper & presentation will be provided in class. Class Participation (10%) This grade will be calculated to reflect your participation in class discussion, your engagement in group projects, and your capacity to introduce ideas and share thoughts to the class. To create a positive learning experience for all students, you are expected to come to class prepared and complete required readings, give full attention to class activities and respect class rules (i.e., cell-phone off, laptop for notes only, etc.). Attendance Seminar The seminar will meet once a week, 2 or 3 hours each time, for 30 or 36 hours in total. Students are expected to attend all scheduled class sessions including company visits and other academic activities. Instructors will compile regular attendance records within the first fifteen minutes of each session. Students arriving after attendance record is taken may be marked absent at the discretion of the instructor. The attendance records will be taken into account when evaluating student participation and performance. Absences may be excused in the event of a medical necessity or family emergency. In such cases, student should inform the instructor or program manager 2 hours prior to the class and get the approval, and submit an Excused Absence Form for the absence to the instructor or program manager in two days. In this seminar, a maximum of two sessions of accumulated absences approved by instructors or program managers will be tolerated. Missing more than two sessions may impact your final grades or automatically fail the course.
