Bridging Cultures - Meaningful Encounters

A Heartwarming Exchange

At the start of their journey, the students visited Zum Weissen Ross’l, an inclusive social space run by Jun’ai Charity Organization, where they watched a puppet show performed by young actors with Down syndrome, known as the “Honey Babies.” After the performance, they created handmade cards together, exchanging heartfelt messages. This special interaction left everyone with a deep sense of warmth and connection.

A Fun-Filled Classroom

At the Elementary Division of ECNU No. 4 Affiliated School, Chinese students enthusiastically introduced traditional Chinese costumes, Shanghai landmarks, and other aspects of Chinese culture in English. They then led hands-on activities, teaching the St. Olaf students how to paint traditional Chinese bamboo paintings and make intricate paper cuttings. It was an inspiring cross-cultural exchange where students became both learners and teachers.

Conversations Beyond Borders

The St. Olaf students also engaged in a face-to-face cultural dialogue with their Chinese counterparts at East China Normal University (ECNU). Sitting together in small groups, they shared stories about their hometowns, daily lives, and cultural traditions, forming friendships that transcended national boundaries.

A Walking Classroom - Echoes of History

Shanghai Stories: A Forgotten Chapter

In Shanghai, the students visited the Jewish Refugees Museum, where they learned about the city’s role in sheltering Jewish refugees during World War II. This lesser-known history deepened their appreciation for Shanghai’s multicultural past and its spirit of resilience and compassion.

Memories of Nanjing: Reflecting on History

In mid-January, the group traveled to Nanjing, a city steeped in history. They explored the ancient Ming City Wall, experienced the vibrant atmosphere of Confucius Temple Market, and paid a solemn visit to the Memorial Hall of The Victims in Nanjing Massacre, a place of deep reflection. At Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum and Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, they gained insight into China’s historical legacy.

The Essence of Hangzhou: A Journey Through Poetry and Tea

On January 23, the students arrived in Hangzhou, a city known for its breathtaking scenery and rich cultural heritage. They took a serene boat ride on West Lake, strolled along Southern Song Imperial Street, and visited the ancient Lingyin Temple, where they found a moment of peace in the heart of nature. A highlight of their visit was the tea-tasting experience in Hangzhou’s tea plantations, where they gained a newfound appreciation for China’s renowned tea culture.

Celebrating the Lunar New Year - Immersing in Festivities

A First Taste of Chinese New Year Traditions

No visit to China in January would be complete without experiencing the vibrant Lunar New Year celebrations! The St. Olaf students joined ECNU’s international students at a Spring Festival Fair, trying their hand at stilt walking, riddle guessing, and calligraphy, where they wrote the Chinese character “福” (meaning fortune and happiness) to welcome the new year.

A Festive Reunion at ECNU

As the holiday approached, ECNU hosted a New Year’s Eve reunion dinner for over 800 students and faculty members staying on campus. The St. Olaf students were warmly welcomed into this festive gathering, enjoying a traditional banquet, lively performances, and even winning prizes in the lucky draw!

Cooking Up the New Year Spirit

On Chinese New Year’s Eve, the St. Olaf students embraced the festive spirit by preparing their own reunion dinner at ECNU. They cooked dishes, played games, and experienced the joy of gathering around the table—a true taste of Chinese New Year warmth and tradition.

22 days in China, with countless meaningful experiences. This was more than just a trip—it was an immersive cultural adventure. From connecting with Chinese students to walking through historical landmarks, and celebrating the Lunar New Year in the most authentic way, every day brought new discoveries and heartfelt moments.

Until we meet again—may the story of friendship between Chinese and American youth continue to unfold!
