In early December, students from East China Normal University Intensive Chinese Program (Class 1-1B) and UAE Foundation Program visited  The Experimental School of Foreign Language Affiliated to ECNU for a joyful, rewarding cultural exchange with local primary students.

On the day of the event, as the international students arrived at the school gate, they were greeted by the children of ESFL who had been eagerly waiting there. Lined up with warm and enthusiastic cheers, the children radiated pure friendship and anticipation. Together, everyone gathered for a group photo, capturing through the lens a moment of warmth that transcended borders.

During the cultural sharing session, the international students took the stage one after another, using vivid language, interesting images, and distinctive physical displays to present the unique local customs and cultures of ten different countries: the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, South Korea, Morocco, Russia, Eswatini, Thailand, and Yemen. Between explanations, they frequently engaged with the young students in the audience through interactive Q&A sessions. Laughter and applause filled the venue one after another, giving the children a more vivid and profound understanding of foreign cultures.

Next, Chinese and international students teamed up for a game called "Pass the Hoop." Three groups took turns on stage, each consisting of four international students and three elementary school pupils. Together, they coordinated to pass a hula hoop through every team member. Before the match, teammates exchanged tactics through eye contact and gestures. During the game, smart moves like bending to pass it along and twisting to cooperate were frequently on display.

After the game session, the teachers and students of Huawai Experimental School presented handcrafted traditional costumes representing intangible cultural heritage. The exquisite craftsmanship left the international students in the audience marveling in admiration.

The school also specially arranged hands-on experience activities in paper-cutting and lacquer fan making, allowing both Chinese and international students to immerse themselves in the charm of China’s intangible cultural heritage crafts. Everyone split into two groups based on their interests and, after the teachers carefully explained the steps and techniques, couldn’t wait to start trying their hands at the crafts. International students and elementary school pupils helped and collaborated with each other, and in the end, everyone completed their own satisfying works.

This event not only provided an opportunity for cross-cultural dialogue and hands-on experience, but also built a bridge of friendship between international and local students. It showcased the power of mutual learning and shared joy, leaving a meaningful imprint on all participants.
