On September 24, 2022, 30 international students with Chinese government scholarships from 14 countries of East China Normal University participated in the series activity of "Perceiving China -- Feeling the Spirit of Shanghai Culture". During the activity, the students visited Lu Xun Memorial Hall, Sihang Warehouse and the banks of Suzhou Creek. Through the visiting, they had a more comprehensive perception of the historical development of Shanghai and even Chinese society and the firm spirit of reform and opening up and the cultural outlook. At the same time, they learned the two themes of "humanity and environmental protection" of Shanghai's modern governance concept.
Through cultural relics, they learned Mr. Lu Xun's firm spirit of persisting in his ideals and beliefs in the era of internal and external troubles. Ahsan, a student from Pakistan, likes reading Lu Xun's articles. He said, "I have only studied Lu Xun in textbooks before. This visit has deepened my understanding of Lu Xun's spiritual connotation."
Starting from the Baidu Bridge at the Suzhou River, the students walked along the north bank of the river. They visited historical buildings such as the Shanghai building, the Postal Museum, and several representative bridges. They had a deeper understanding of the name of the Suzhou River and the scenery before and after the transformation.
At Sihang Warehouse, the terminal of this walk, the students learned about the patriotism of the Chinese soldiers in the Songhu War of Resistance through vivid explanations.
Every year, the Global Education Center of East China Normal University organizes activities of perceiving China in various forms and contents to help more international students learn about China, and promote exchanges between countries and between people. We also hope that students can learn more about a more authentic, comprehensive and three-dimensional China by walking, listening and seeing more.
