In May, the students of Intensive Chinese Program class 1-3A went into Shanghai Botanical Garden to carry out a social practice activity with the theme of "Treasure Hunting in the Botanical Garden: Exploring Greenness and Understanding Culture".The students learned knowledge and practiced their abilities in the natural classroom, and successfully completed all the practical tasks.
The Shanghai Botanical Garden is an oasis for enjoyment and learning, with more than 1,000 species of plants in full bloom in spring. There are rare plants and science museums in the Garden.
By asking questions about their hometown, representative plants, favorite plants and the reasons for the visit, the students not only deepened their understanding of plants, but also exercised their oralChinese skills.
Treasure hunt in the botanical garden
Divide into groups to "hunt for treasures", find and photograph the representative plants mentioned by the interviewees.
Form Chinese characters with fallen leaves
Everyone exerted their creativity and ingeniously pieced together meaningful Chinese characters using the fallen leaves carefully collected in the garden. They also expounded their creative concepts, perfectly integrating the beauty of nature with the culture of Chinese characters.
Each group also has its own "special task", which involves finding the designated park through a map, describing the route from the entrance to the park, and delving into the park to introduce three special plants with pictures and text.
After the activity, the students delved deeply into the traditional Chinese culture related to plants and made presentations in class, introducing the "Four Gentlemen" of Chinese culture - plum, orchid, bamboo and chrysanthemum, as well as the characteristics of representative traditional Chinese medicines (such as ginseng, wolfberry and Angelica).
The lush green botanical garden is a vivid classroom where students learn about green plants and appreciate the charm of Chinese culture through hands-on experience.
Social practice activity is an extension of Chinese class, taking students into various aspects of life in Chinese society, applying Chinese in real-life context, and gaining language progress and cultural insights.
