On July 14, the “2025 Experience Diverse China" summer program opened in the lecture hall of the East China Normal University Putuo Campus' library. 95 students from 21 countries, including the UK, South Korea, Russia, Singapore, Germany, France, and the Netherlands, joined the program.
Jin Lijun, the deputy director of ECNU’s Global Education Center and Inez Janna Summers from the University of Manchester attended the ceremony, along with all the Chinese teachers and student volunteers.
Opening ceremony
Ms. Jin Lijun delivered a speech on behalf of the GEC. She extended a warm welcome to all the students who had traveled from afar and sincerely said, "Whether this is your first visit to China or one of many, and regardless of your current proficiency in Mandarin, we sincerely hope that the four-week program of intensive study and cultural immersion will deepen your command of the language and heighten your appreciation of the richness of Chinese culture."
LUKE CHRISTOPHER RYE from the University of Manchester shared his first impressions of Shanghai and expressed his anticipation for the upcoming four-week "Experience Diverse China" journey.
Ms. Tang Shutong, from the Student Life & Support Office conducted orientation education for everyone, introduced the program schedule, and reminded everyone of safety and health information. She hoped that students would fully engage in Chinese language courses and cultural activity experiences.
Campus Tour
After the opening ceremony, the group toured the campus. Volunteers explained the functions and stories of each location. The students have gradually formed a clear and vivid first impression of the campus.
Class meeting
According to the Chinese proficiency of the students, the program has set up 6 classes to better carry out suitable Chinese teaching tasks for students of different levels. During the class meetings, everyone first introduced themselves to get to know each other, helping teachers and students establish initial connections.
Each class prepared ice-breaking games. These activities not only fostered friendships among students from different countries but also built mutual trust and a sense of belonging to their respective classes.
The students from the University of Manchester went on a cultural exploration tour of Shanghai earlier on July 11th. They strolled through streets with distinctive Shanghai characteristics, such as Tianzifang and Da Pu Qiao, experiencing the city's blend of tradition and modernity.
We wish everyone a bright and unforgettable summer in vibrant Shanghai, diverse China!
