A Lifelong Bond at ECNU

My postgraduate study abroad experience at East China Normal University was more transformative than I could have ever imagined. While navigating the bustling campus, a chance encounter in an elevator led to a friendship that has shaped my life in profound ways. There, I met Sophie, a fellow student who was living with an NYU exchange student. Her curiosity about my cultural background sparked an immediate connection, and little did we know, it was the beginning of an extraordinary bond.

Our time in Shanghai became a tapestry woven with shared experiences. Simple walks turned into deep conversations, meals were filled with laughter, and even the crowded subway rides became moments of joy. Late nights spent studying were often sweetened by Sophie's thoughtful gesture of making tangyuan. She opened my eyes to the vibrant world of Chinese street food and culture, while I shared with her the nuances of American life. Among the many small kindnesses, she once lent me a pair of bright yellow chopsticks. Though meant to be borrowed, I ended up keeping them, and they became a poignant reminder of her during the times we were apart.

Saying goodbye when my program ended was difficult, but our reconnection was seamless when Sophie eventually made her way to Philadelphia years later. We happily lived together, rekindling the warmth and laughter we had shared in Shanghai. It was during this time that she taught me to make her family’s comforting “Sophie noodle soup,” a tomato and egg drop soup that has since become a beloved staple in my home.

Our bond transcended geographical distance and life changes. Sophie stood by my side as the maid of honor at my wedding, a testament to the depth of our friendship. Now, as mothers with children of our own, our families have become intertwined. Our children know each other, and her parents, visiting from China, have embraced my kids as well. We remain constant pillars of support for each other, sharing our lives, our joys, and our challenges. Our conversations flow effortlessly, built on a unique emotional connection and a shared energy that makes every moment together a delight.

Looking back, I am filled with immense gratitude for my time at East China Normal University. It was there, within its vibrant walls, that a simple elevator ride blossomed into a lifelong friendship with Sophie – that has enriched my life immeasurably and created a beautiful tapestry of shared cultures and unwavering support. We are truly grateful for the wonderful time at ECNU, which gave us the serendipity of meeting lifelong kindred spirits.
