On the afternoon of December 18, 2024, the Winter Solstice Garden Party, organized by ISU Life Development Department, was successfully held. More than 100 Chinese and international students gathered on the first floor of the International Exchange Service Center and took part in a series of activities around the theme of "Winter Solstice"
In the "handicraft area", students can do clay paintings, bamboo strip weaving paintings, scarf preparation and so on. In the process of doing this, students learned about the traditional festival, made friends and had a good time.
The “Nine Nine Cold Paintings”, in the form of drawings, is also known as the “Painting of Nine”. It is a Chinese folk method of calculating the dates of cold days and spring blossoms. Participants received a mini cold relief map as a souvenir and got to know its cultural significance. There is also a tea-making session around the stove, which is full of warmth.
Eating dumplings on the winter solstice is especially prevalent in the southern part of China. "Round" means "reunion" and "completeness", and eating dumplings during the winter solstice is also called "winter solstice circle". There is a folk saying that "You'll be a year older with dumplings". In Ningbo, it is a custom to eat sweet potato soup.
People in northern part of China eat dumplings on this day because dumplings have the meaning of "dispelling cold". There is still a folk saying that "if you don't serve dumplings on the winter solstice, you will freeze your ears."

As a traditional Chinese folk snack, sugar gourd is the winter memory of several generations of children. On the day of the event, an area was set up for the students to try making sugar gourds and explore the flavor.
