Class Moment | Understanding Shanghai’s culture, Starting from Old Buildings

On an April day of lovely spring scenery, students from Class 2-1B of the Chinese Intensive Program went to Jing'an Sculpture Park and started a cultural journey full of fun and enlightenment.

Before departure, the teacher introduced to the students the history of the development of Chinese sculpture art and the location of this activity. Jing'an Sculpture Park is a sculpture-themed park with a modern garden style, featuring contemporary sculptures created by master artists from France, the United States, Belgium and other parts of the world. It is an open urban park, people-oriented, green-oriented, harmonious and unified, and is a model of perfect combination of sculpture works with culture and nature. Here, students will enjoy the charm of sculpture art and Chinese and Western cultures while working in small groups to carry out rich and interesting language practice tasks.

Students searched for sculptures that best fit each theme, based on the keywords "nature", "history", "dragon", "modern" and "ancient". After a group discussion, students gave a brief introduction and description of the chosen sculpture in Chinese, including its size, color, style and the cultural connotation it conveys. All group members took the group cards and sculpture description paper they had made and posed for pictures with their chosen sculpture. Students also worked together to find their group's favorite building to take a picture of and come up with a new Chinese name for it.

At the end of the activity, each group presented their results. The "Sun" team's favorite building was "Passage to another world". They were attracted by the beauty and mystery of this modern work. The "Flower" team designed a team logo full of vitality, and their favorite building was "Angel·Wing Turtle", from which they learned the unique charm of different cultures. They not only found icons containing the word "architecture", but also met the "uncle" who wrote "华东师范" on the ground, which became the focus of the whole audience. The "Xinglong Xinlong" group named their favorite building "Red Shelter", which is meaningful and poetic.

Social practice activity is an extension of Chinese class, taking students into various aspects of life in Chinese society, applying Chinese in real-life context, and gaining language progress and cultural insights.
