On May 18th, students from Class 2-1A of Intensive Chinese Program went to Anfu Road together, disguised as little fashionistas, to experience the fusion and collision of Shanghai's fashion industry and Netflix traffic economy with traditional culture.
Located in Jing'an District of Shanghai, Anfu Road is a street that blends historical flavor with modern commerce. There are exquisite cafes, fine art stores, and hip and cool clothing stores ... showing the ancient and modern prosperity of Shanghai.
Students went into the stores to unlock the secrets of Anfu Road's hotness, and took on the role of a street reporter to record the popular stores and specialty items.
During the field research, students not only transformed themselves into “hipsters” and photographers, shooting fashion pictures at different spots on Anfu Road, but also learned how to discover and evaluate fashion elements through street photography, interviews and observation. At the same time, they gained a deeper understanding of Shanghai's cityscape and citizens' life.
Students gained a lot through this practice activity. Each group gave an oral debriefing in the class, telling the teacher and classmates what they had seen and heard and their thoughts on the current situation of Anfu Road.
Social practice activity is an extension of Chinese class, taking students into various aspects of life in Chinese society, applying Chinese in real-life context, and gaining language progress and cultural insights.
