On May 17, ECNU Global Education Centre together with CIEE Shanghai held the 2019 Spring “Chinese Carnival” outside the physics building. The carnival comprised ten different booths for students to participate at, where students used their Chinese language skills to complete challenges regarding life in China.
Over the course of the day over 200 international students participated in a wide variety of activities, completed challenges to receive stamps and won prizes and souvenirs to take home.
Let’s have a look at what everyone got up to!
Theme 1【Exercise and Be Happy】
The booths provide a series of themes for brainstorming in addition to physical exercises and challenges for students. Sports pictures are reproduced in the classrooms, and exercise equipment allows the students to experience joys of volleyball, hula hoops, table tennis and running on the treadmill, all while answering questions! Play while learning, learn while playing, exercise and be happy!
This booth has prepared two thematic activities for students, namely "Radical Composition" and "Chinese Character Composition". Students first find the correct combination of Chinese characters by recognizing the radicals and parts. Then they quickly form five words through 20 Chinese lantern arrays. The students not only acquired a new method of learning Chinese characters, but also came into contact with Chinese traditional culture in the form of activities like riddles guessing. The students learn the culture in practice.
Theme 3 【Experience Chinese Culture, Feel Charming China】
This booth has prepared two thematic activities for students to understand the objects and knowledge with Chinese elements. Guess the object shows the small stuffs with Chinese culture. The knowledge quiz test the foreign students' understanding and mastery of Chinese geography, history and culture.
Theme 4 【Happy Visit Campus and Happy Learning Chinese
This booth prepared two thematic activities for students: distinguishing the beautiful scenery of campus and map of ECNU. Campus pictures show the fascinating scenery of the school, while reviewing the place nouns learned in the classroom. Mini version of campus map helps students complete their tasks. Distinctive darts and giant dice make the event site full of pleasure.
Theme 5【Welcome to China】
Can you use your Chinese language skills to apply for a Chinese visa? Do you know how to get your visa extended? Let's see how our students got on at our makeshift "visa center"!
Theme 6 【Living in China】
Welcome home. This booth showcased the fun and practical aspects of living with a Chinese host family. Students learnt the names of some common household items, enabling them to communicate better with their host families.
Theme 7 【I Am a Foodie】
Students absolutely loved the food booth where they could try China’s “Eight major cuisines” and some local Shanghai dimsim. Students were able to try out their language skills ordering both delivery and off a menu, as well as learning how to order a nutritious breakfast.
Theme 8 【Just Buy It】
Can you use Chinese to get a refund, bargain, or pay with WeChat/Alipay? How about buying souvenirs? Let's see if our students were able to complete the set tasks!
Theme 9【Go Everywhere】
Students practices all the words related with transportation, and conducted conversations happened in the taxi, trian and airplane.
Theme 10 【World Traveler】
Let’s go travelling together! Here students experienced some of problems that can crop up while travelling and had to use Chinese language to resolve situations – how did they go?
