On the morning of June 15, the closing ceremony for the 13th "Shanghai Summer School: Diplomats Program," organized by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission and the Shanghai Municipal Foreign Affairs Office, and hosted by East China Normal University, was grandly held at the Alumni House. Diplomats from consulates in Shanghai attended the ceremony.
Jin Lijun, Deputy Director of the Global Education Center, first congratulated the diplomat students on their successful completion of the program. She reviewed the development of the program over the past decade, noting that nearly 600 consulate officials from more than 60 countries have participated in this program. She also extended a sincere invitation to all students to return to the campus as alumni during this year's International Culture Festival. Three representatives from Uruguay, Hungary, and Japan spoke, sharing in fluent Chinese the tremendous benefits of learning Chinese and experiencing Chinese culture through the program. They expressed heartfelt thanks to East China Normal University for organizing the program and providing a platform for cultural exchange.
The Diplomats Program is held at our university from March to June each year. The Global Education Center designs and organizes the courses and activities, creating Chinese language courses tailored to the needs of diplomats, enriching cultural activities, and providing professional and thoughtful services and management. Over the years, this has earned widespread acclaim from consulates in Shanghai. This year, the program featured expert lectures on topics such as the changes in
contemporary Chinese society and Chinese feng shui, as well as a garden party to experience Dragon Boat Festival customs, make rice dumpling, sachets, rice cakes, and bamboo fans. The diplomats also witnessed the exciting moment when our university’s international student dragon boat team won the championship for the sixth time at the 14th Shanghai Universities International Students Dragon Boat Race. While learning Chinese, they also gained a deeper understanding of Chinese history, customs, and contemporary social development, which was greatly appreciated by the participants.
At the graduation ceremony, the "6th Diplomats Chinese Show" was also held. Participants from consulates in Norway, Malaysia, Japan, Mexico, Uruguay, and Hungary showcased their Chinese language learning achievements through tongue twisters, Chinese songs, movie dubbing, classical Chinese literature recitations, and dances. Finally, all teachers and students emotionally sang Tomorrow Will Be Better, bringing this year's program to a perfect close.
The Diplomats Program is a prestigious project of the Shanghai Summer School. Over the past thirteen years, it has provided consulate diplomats in Shanghai with an excellent platform for language learning and cultural exchange, serving as a vital link between the Shanghai Municipal Government and the consulates in Shanghai. It plays a significant role in promoting friendly exchanges and building bridges of friendship between China and foreign countries. We look forward to seeing you again next year!
